AfterCollege List of Top Cities for New Grads Featured in BusinessWeek

Comprehensive list of top-rated cities for recent college grads gives hopeful grads who are willing to move an idea of where to find opportunities

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – July 19, 2010 – AfterCollege, the largest online career network for students and recent grads, was featured last Friday in BusinessWeek, a leader in international business news and stock market information. The article, entitled Top Cities for New College Grads, profiled 30 standout cities culled from an initial pool of 3,580 municipalities.

The number one destination for new college grads was Houston, where a private-sector push has resulted in 31,000 new positions since January. Washington, Dallas, Atlanta, and Austin rounded out the top five, a clear reflection of the strengthening job market in the South.

A shake-up in this year’s top ten cities left Indianapolis (No. 1 last year) and Chicago (No. 7) excluded from the current rankings. Roberto Angulo, CEO of AfterCollege, attributed the elimination to the declining job market in certain regions. Overall, most cities saw a drop in the number of postings for new college grads.

“In an effort to assist graduates who have expressed an overwhelming frustration in the lack of available jobs, AfterCollege is pleased to announce their annual best cities for recent college graduates,” Angulo said. “We encourage all graduates to undergo their own careful research, but utilizing this data can certainly help when making career decisions. As employers and recruiting leaders, we should all be making a concentrated effort to help our graduates realize the ultimate reward for all their hard work in school: a fulfilling career that allows them to expand upon the education they received.”

The ranking was based on the AfterCollege postings, city unemployment rates, and the average annual pay for all occupations as reported by the U.S. Labor Dept. Wages were adjusted for cost of living, using data from the Council for Community & Economic Research.
